A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.

Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
